This is a post from The New York Times.
Serena Williams won the United States Open women’s singles title, after fending off a match point — not to mention 11 months of injuries and health concerns that plagued her during the last two years. Have you ever come from behind and surprised yourself with greatness, whether on the field, in school or in some other aspect of your life? When have you ever managed to perform better than you imagined?
In the article “Surprising Even Herself, Williams Rallies to Title,” Christopher Clarey writes:
In May, Williams made personal history of a more painful sort when she lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament in singles for the first time, losing her nerve and her rhythm against Virginie Razzano of France on clay at the French Open.“I have never been so miserable after a loss,” said Williams, who responded by training in Paris under a new coach, Patrick Mouratoglou. She added: “Sometimes they say it’s good to lose. I still would have preferred to win, but, you know, that was forever ago.”So it must seem. Since Paris, Williams, 30, has won the singles and women’s doubles at Wimbledon, won the singles and doubles gold medals at the Summer Olympics and now changed her luck at the United States Open….
Tell about a time when you surprised yourself to achieve something notable, especially if you first thought you might fail. Did it happen on the field, in school or somewhere else? How were you able to achieve what you did? How did your accomplishment affect you?
I think this is a great story! I find it amazing that someone who had many injuries, won singles and double golds in the Olympics. I remember in gymnastics I thought I was going to fail the first day. (like 3 years ago) I didn't fail, I was just... average. Also, I remember the limbo contest last year! :D This was real limbo, not the little cheat cheat kind. I thought I was going to fail, but i tied for first! Not knowing this was going to happen, I won THE MOST EPIC PRIZE! CANDY!!!!! :DDDDDDD
ReplyDeleteGood times, Good times. :)
DeleteI think it's wonderful. :) :) I definitely have succeeded when I thought I might fail. There's two times. The first was quite a while ago (just three months, I think) when I had a big basketball tournament. I thought that I was going to fail completely, and I was very nervous. But it didn't turn out bad, and I succeeded by helping my team win. :)
ReplyDeleteThe second one was more recently, only last Saturday. I went to the volleyball tournament at Hoover to play for Manchester. Some people might think this is quite odd because we lost..like, how is that succeeding? But really, some people don't know that succeeding basically is doing your best and believing it..And much more. But anyways..XP What I did was when I thought I was going to miss the ball, I actually hit it, and when it was my turn to serve, I made it over. I did have mistakes, but if I tried my best, that's succeeding for me. ;)
Basically, trying my best helped me to succeed. If you succeed you usually have more confidence, And that's how it affected me. ^^
What are you talking about?? You did great at the tournament!!
DeleteWhat are you taking about?? You did awesomer!!
DeleteI forgot this ...

This is super inspirational!! In 4th grade during track and feild, I did shot put for the first time at the qualifying meet. I was very nervous, but I got fourth place and moved on up to the Junior Fresno Relays(the third meet after the qualifier) doing shot put!
ReplyDeleteYeah, you were AWESOME at shot put.
DeleteOops, I meant in 3rd grade XD
DeleteThis is a great story for inspiration. A time that I thought I would fail is in swimming. At first, I didn't know how to swim or do anything that involves swimming. But when I got into the water and began swimming, I didn't fail after all. It was really hard because I was nervous but I succeeded even though I thought I wouldn't. :D
ReplyDeleteThanks for reminding me! :D I felt nervous when I started swimming at Fig Garden. When I came to watch one day, everybody looked really good! Now, I think swimming is really fun, and it's cool for people to be part fish! :3
DeleteSwimming is awesome. But I'm not really that good :P I can float, though! Totally agree with you, anyways XP ^^
DeleteXD I bet you are a great simmer! :D
DeleteOnce I swam a 100 fly, but couldn't finish. I was crushed but a year or so later I tried it again knowing that I would get 9th or so, but I came in 1st and beat the second person by 25 seconds, that's a lot of time in swimming.

That story really moved me. I was on my schools football team last year. One game we were playing and the score was tied. We had the ball and the touch down was right there. When the quarterback threw me the ball, I wasn't sure I would catch it. I caught it and ran. I was lucky and made it to the touch down.

I can relate to this. I was in the track and field qualifying meet running the 800. It was top 10 (I think) to qualify and I barely qualified and got 8th. The next meet it was top 6 to qualify and there was no way I could have qualified, but I ran my hardest and got 3rd. I couldn't believe I qualified!
ReplyDeletethere was a time that I studied for a test really hard when it got to the test i forgot my information. I tried to use the knowledge I knew and put the right answers. The next day I got my test and to my suprise I got 100%. I was so shocked that I had to tell everyone in the class.
ReplyDeleteGreat story, reminds me of my game we played last weekend when we played a tough game and came out on top!!!!! My trick was to take deep breaths and let go of the negatives.
ReplyDeleteIn cross country I never feel like I'm going to get a ribbon but I always try to do my best, and I usually get a ribbon. :) :D
ReplyDeleteNow that's choosing your mindset...
DeleteLast year, I performed a play and I sang a song at my church. I got nervous on the day of and I freaked out. I thought I was going to forget my lines or forget a verse. And if I did, what would happen? Would I be teased or
criticized? I was so caught up in what would happen if I messed up, rather than practicing and thinking positive. But after it all passed, the chills; stage fright, I realized that a good performer always gets nervous that they’ll make a mistake. That’s why when it happens, you don’t. That’s why it was such a memorable moment for me. I realized that stressing over something will only make you do worse.
I was trying out for cross country and I thought I would come in last and be totally embarrassed, but I made the team and that's when I started to like running.

DeleteThis story is inspirational. Last year,at Cross Country, I was super nervous and thought I was going to fail. I ended up getting first though. Another time was when I was running the 1500m for track last year I was super nervous. I had to get top four {to make it to valley] anded ended up getting fourth barely.

I remember when Des and I were throwing javelins for track. I wasn't very good and I thought that I was going to fail. But when I threw the javelin I actually got some decent throws.

I remember when I was at a cross country meet and I got 4 place. I averaged around 16-18 that year so I was sure I would get a bad place. Instead, I got 4 place and was rewarded with the ribbon.
ReplyDeletei remember when i first tried out for cross country i was really nervous and thought i would get like 30th place but i ended up getting a pretty decent place
ReplyDeleteI remember the first CST I ever took. I thought I was going to get a horrible score, but I ended up getting all advanced!!!!
ReplyDeleteWhen I first tried out for cross country I didn't do very well in the try-outs, and I even tried a second time and I still was horrible. When the final team got posted, I was sure I wouldn't get in, but I looked anyway and it trned out that I had made it! It seriously raised my self esteem at the meets.
ReplyDeleteOnce I played against my tennis coach and I was sure I would lose but when I tried and tried I won. :):)
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in Peach Blossom a few years ago, I was pretty nervous. I kept thinking that I would go up there, say a few lines of the poem, and then forget everything that was next. But I did a great job. After the competition, one of the judges told my mom that she owns an advertising agency and that she wanted to use me in commercials. I guess i did o-kay after all.

when I tried for cross country I thought I was going to fail. Turns out i did all right for 23rd place:D.
ReplyDeleteWhen I tried out for competitive soccer I thought I would not make the team. Everyone else seemed very good and I came from a rec team so I did not have confidence in myself. I did my best and turns out I made the team. This made me believe in myself more
ReplyDeleteWell this is cool, i have always thought that as long as you never give up you can do anything under the sun.
ReplyDeleteI remember I didnt think I could make it ion the Fresno city final for cross country but I made it in and when I competed against others in the finals I got 12th
DeleteIsn't that you number? XD
