The Soiree and Potluck

What a great day in Room14...and not just because there was no homework!  :)  We started the day by talking about how NOT to be a bystander.  Later we listened to beautiful music, saw a magic trick, traveled back in time in a play, and tried to score a goal. While enjoying delicious food - THANK YOU PARENTS! - we heard baaaad jokes.

What was your favorite part of the day?  (I am writing this knowing that NO ONE will be reading it. heh.heh)

Halloween Follow Up

I gave out so much candy that I could only have my light on for an hour! Remember, I had 1400 pieces of candy.

Really...What is the "correct" amount of candy to give out?

If one has purchased Halloween-sized candy, how many pieces are the "proper" amount for trick or treating?

QUESTIONS, COMMENTS, AND/OR CONCERNS

Today's introduction to the Holocaust was difficult for many of us. Please feel free to question, comment, clarify, or relay a concern on the topic. Be sure to discuss with your parents, too!

Be sure to DO something extra nice tonight for your parents or siblings.  You may blog about how it felt to help someone rather than blogging on our topic of concern.

Just in case you were wondering....the picture has nothing to do with our blogging topic, but I thought we needed something cute and sweet to look at. Also, you might want to go to the class website and play the Grooveshark playlist; it is very lovely.

What belief is important to you?

Tomorrow we will read a New York Times article about a 14 year old Pakistani school girl. She believes girls should be educated, but others disagree with her....vehemently.

When Have You Ever Succeeded When You Thought You Might Fail?

Serena Williams won the United States Open women’s singles title, after fending off a match point — not to mention 11 months of injuries and health concerns that plagued her during the last two years. Have you ever come from behind and surprised yourself with greatness, whether on the field, in school or in some other aspect of your life? When have you ever managed to perform better than you imagined?

In the article “Surprising Even Herself, Williams Rallies to Title,” Christopher Clarey writes:

In May, Williams made personal history of a more painful sort when she lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament in singles for the first time, losing her nerve and her rhythm against Virginie Razzano of France on clay at the French Open.

“I have never been so miserable after a loss,” said Williams, who responded by training in Paris under a new coach, Patrick Mouratoglou.

She added: “Sometimes they say it’s good to lose. I still would have preferred to win, but, you know, that was forever ago.”

So it must seem. Since Paris, Williams, 30, has won the singles and women’s doubles at Wimbledon, won the singles and doubles gold medals at the Summer Olympics and now changed her luck at the United States Open….

Tell about a time when you surprised yourself to achieve something notable, especially if you first thought you might fail. Did it happen on the field, in school or somewhere else? How were you able to achieve what you did? How did your accomplishment affect you?

Overthrowing Leaders

In the real ancient world, leaders were overthrown.  So, it is a legitimate idea in our Room14 city-states, BUT we don't want to hurt feelings or make it about popularity.
