I fell like this alot to, that kids can change the world. When I was a kid i told my mom that i wanted a touchscreen device like in the space movies. I said it would be a very cool, and very helpful. My mother explained to me that it was impossible for a touchscreen that could do that, but later the Ipad was invented and my childhood dream was made.
I actually said something similar to that when I was a kid, and my dad said something like, "Judging by the amount technology has advanced in last few years, I wouldn't be surprised." I am now typing this in a household with 2 iPads, 1 iPhone, and one iPod touch. It's so nice to see dreams come true.:)
I think this was a very cool video. Like Darin was saying in class, she seems very mature. When I think of it, it does seem like she was home schooled. Oh and something to add on is the video isn't working for me. (I don't know if it is working for anybody else.) :)
Kids are goingto be the next generation. They will be the next scientist, the next NASA, and everything. the adults dont always know everything. Somtimes icome home and tell my mom somthing that she never knew. When I was in kindergarden or first grade, I was reading 8th grade books. This shows that the next generation of leaders will be better than the old one. -Isaiah #4
I think it's cool that she already wrote a book and is doing a TED talk when she looks about my age.. She has accomplished a lot in a pretty short time when some people wait so many years to just publish a book.
I though what she said was great! I agreed with everything, but I thought it would be weird if kids taught grown ups. Though, I remember when I was little always I wanted to teach my parents something.:)
I feel the same way Alyssa (If you are Alyssa if not I apologize) when i was little I would always go on the internet and look up random facts to interest my parents.
Undoubtedly, I agree with the facts that kids can change the world, and that adults and kids can acquire new knowledge from each other. The girl in the video has obviously accomplished a lot, and she's an inspirational speaker to young people, like us. I agree with Isaiah that the next generation will always be better than the current one, because as we learn about the findings of the current generation, the competition grows better and the technology and knowledge is more intelligent. I also agree with Christy about her being very mature- I think she's really well-educated for her age (which remains unknown to me). Really, she is an amazing person, and I definitely agree with her claims. (I love the text-evidence she gave. [: ) When someone says something like, "you're too young to do this, and that, and you definitely should wait until you're OLDER." For me, that seemed biased, like kids are still people and we're growing smarter generation by generation, so why can't we do stuff that adults are doing?
(And this is way off topic, but I'm really curious, so "If a tree falls in the woods and no man is there to hear it, does it still happen?" My opinion: I have no idea, but I'm thinking no.)
Of course it still happens the answer is obvious, I always thought of this as a question that people ask thinking if human kind wasn't there does it matter. Well my answer is that of course it matters and it did happen even though there were no eye witnesses it still happened and if it didn't happen just cause no one was there then the entire world could be different. At least that's my answer I'm curious to see what other people think.
WELL..I searched online and it said sound was imagination of the brain, waves, or something. Anyway, the point is that with no brains around, sound CANNOT happen! So no. Well, I don't know. Haha, I'm curious too.
I agree that parents and techers should never under estimate a child no matter what age. I believe every class should taught like our's because we have viral teching/learning almost every day. Any way, that is my opinion.!!!!!!!!.
That is just so cool! It really ties in with the ted talk about schools killing creativity. We are so much more than grownups realize. Shakespeare was a kid! Steve Jobs was a kid! They sure had something to say that no grownup at the time would've thought of. Our imaginations won't stop. Out of all the things we think of a lot of them have so much meaning and aren't just silly nonsense. Lots of grownups naturally assume that anything we are going to say, they will know. They might not even realize it but they probably do. One time my family was talking about something and I made a suggestion. Then after awhile my dad said the same thing like I never said it. When I said it, it meant nothing It seems like ppl don't care about my opinion, because Im "just a kid". When ppl say just a kid what is that supposed to mean. It's limiting what we can do. They can't do it they are JUST A KID. Their opinion doesn't matter, they are JUST A KID. They cant handle it because they are JUST A KID. I don't know why but it really gets to me. I have a LOT to say as you can tell.
Oh My Gosh!! I thought that girl was a small lady! She talked very smoothly and grown-up like. Also she used mature adult words. I totally agree with all she had to say but my favorite part was about the glass museum. KIDS CAN CHANGE THE WORLD (along with kittens and cats). :)
You may be right Elisabeth, cats do have a lot potential and talent hidden under their cute and cuddly fur they could possibly be the answer to many problems who knows I mean the future is unpredictable anything can be possible as long as we keep trying and don't give up on that certain solution it could be possible
Like Isaiah, I agree that kids are going to be the next generation. Adults aren't the only reasons why our generation is so advanced. Look at Taylor Wilson, he created a fusion reactor in his garage. Look at Carol Murphy, a 14 year old millionaire who created a website full of educational topics. Look at Michael Robinson, he created a car security system that only reacts to your voice and is built into your phone. All these "kids" are geniuses. They've done more with their lives than many adults ever plan to do. The thing is, people can do or overcome whatever they set their mind to. Don't doubt or limit the possibilities because of your age, height, size, or what other people have told you. But children are the next generation. "We have to be the change we want to be," Gandhi said. So if we keep feeding ourselves lies, doubts, "I-can't-do-this", "It's too hard", then what's the point of living if you don't plan to accomplish ANYTHING???? My mom always told me that I would do something great with my life. Whether it was becoming a psychologist and changing a person's life, or becoming the greatest President alive to fix the stupid economic mess America is in (no offense Kacey, but that's just an example). So if you believe in yourself, you can do it. "All dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them"-Walt Disney.
PS: Believe in yourself because nothing's impossible. It's just an excuse to get out of trying. Also, the word itself says "im-possible"......................
Kids have a lot of potential inside of them, however people do not listen to what we have to say, thus the most plentiful source of creativity is silenced. For example in my family my parents didn't tell me to learn to read or write before it was required starting in kindergarten, but while watching my aunt play a video game with my brother I wanted to learn to read as well so that I would be able to understand what was happening and follow through to beat my brother at that game in which he was an expert. So I decided to teach myself to read by letting my aunt read to me what was on the screen and I would see the letters and try to figure out the pronunciations. However my little 3 year old brain couldn't do it alone, so with my aunts help, I was reading chapter books by the time I was 4 years old. The main point of this is that no matter your age you are destined for great things and anyone can do anything they set their minds on. For example, Taylor Wilson (Nuclear Kid) wanted to make a nuclear fusion reactor when he was 14, and he succeeded. This proves that kids are the leaders of tomorrow, the future of the human race, and no matter how much you try to deny it you must except that the children of today will be the adults of tomorrow. The creativity in the minds of all children is phenomenal and if it is silenced, they will end up to be someone who does nothing extraordinary with their lives. In reality no one can tell the future but they can try to make it the best they can for themselves and everyone else around them. For instance, when I grow up I want to be a doctor but not any ordinary doctor, I want to find cures for the worst diseases out there (Cancer and other diseases). Also I wish to bring the world to a new medicinal future where illness can be cured with just a quick trip to the doctors office. However far off these dreams may be from present time, I still believe in them and want to bring us that one step closer to achieving that future. Kids are the source of creativity in the world, without us the world would be a blank canvas rather than the beautiful piece of art it is today.
I have some more to add on to my post, so my aunt she doesn't look down on me because of my age she even introduced me to every single one of her friends and i talk to all of them frequently, and they don't look down on me either. They act just as if they were with my aunt or with any of their other friends. Sometimes my aunt needs to tell them to watch their language because that I sound so mature to them, that they forget that I'm so many years younger than them.
I think it is really cool that we can change the world when it becomes our turn. I hope more kids become like Mahatma Gandhi than Adolf Hitler. That would be a great world.
The thing is Kacey, all kids have the potential and creativity to become people who make a difference like Gandhi. But all we can do is go through our lives and wait for the day when more wonderful people like him appear worldwide. Everyone in our class has the potential to become wonderful people.
What passionate responses! Sure, Adora Svitak is considered a prodigy and a brilliant speaker. I've wondered quite often.....what could Room14ers do if they set their minds to II? I think some pretty great things.
Could yours be the generation to find a cancer cure? To stop war? Wow
I think that that all kids have potential and creativity, but the thing is, somtimes adults dont like it because they think it's impossible or it looks childesh. When I saw that girl up there, my first thought was she was adult. Then i realized she was a kid, and I was all like; girl! She was so mature it opened up new colors in my life. Kids could do a lot more than I realized.
In TED, most of the people who talk on it are adults (besides Taylor). Seeing a kid on the show makes me feel like you could almost anything. But it wasn't just that that made me feel good. It was also her words. Her mature helpful words and detailed facts made me feel special, and that you can make your dreams come true. But only if you try hard enough!
I agree that Adora is very mature for her age. I also agree that adults can learn from kids. Kids can have creative ideas that can change the world as we know it, but schools can crush that creativity. If schools supported a more give-and-take relationship, then adults can learn about these ideas and possibly make them a reality.
She is so right. Kids can definitely change the world. This generation possibly can be better than the last. Each time a generation goes by, a BETTER generation is developed. Kids these days have a lot of "creativity." These "creativity" can cause new things to happen to the world. For example, Taylor Wilson had "creativity" and wanted to create the power of a star in a jar. But instead he created something better to help the world. This shows that before long, he can actually change the world and so can kids. :D
So, at first, I too, thought that she was a small adult. But what kind of adult would be promoting the fact that they should be learning from their kids..... well I guess maybe she would. Anyway, I ACTUALLY counted, and she made the adults laugh 10 times, like a mature laugh, not like a oohhh that's cute laugh. Pretty amazing. She also dressed very maturely, which is also on of the reasons I thought she was an adult. I counted this too: she had thee ovations. The ending one was a STANDING ovation, for what, a fifth grader, fourth grader maybe???? I don't even think Taylor Wilson got one of those!!!( And he's 18 or whatever. ) I didn't even recognize some of her vocabulary(which would be sad if some of the words were from Wordmasters) i.e. eutopia? odasity? regimes? not even sure if I'm spelling it right. O.K. So here's a duh reason for ya'. KIDS ARE TEACHING THEIR PARENT HOW TO USE IPHONES, IPODS IPADS ETC!!!!!!!!!!!!! One of the slightly odd things was, I found myself clapping at the end. Also, we went to Kliss Glass, and to me, it seemed plenty hard to bloe galss the way it was... without kids giving you funky ideas. Quick Question: Are the Bacon Boys related to the Beanie Boys?????? Also, for the pig people on the Bacon Boys...boohoohoo!!!!!!! Kind of like what Anthony said..... WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA WHOA..... I mean, adding on to what anthony said, I could read when I was in preschool. So like, if we were witing for our parents to some pick us up or whatever, I'd just pull out a book and start reading to the "leftovers". I saw one of the kids from preschool a couple years back(yes, I'm actually old enough to say that now), in summer school, and he was like Hey you were the kid that could read in preschool huh! And I was like yeah, you actually remember that. And he was like yeah. Also when I was in preschool, I was jealous because there was this kid who could whistle and I couldn't and it seemed like he was whistling 24/7. But I taught myself to whistle. And I'm pretty sure that kid from summer school can read now, Therefore KIDS CAN ACCOMPLISH ANYTHING!(finally getting to the point there as you very well know I can easily get off on tangents). So I totally want to read her book. (This was not a very englishy correct comment, but oh well. )
Well I think that kids have alot to teach adults (their parents, teachers, etc.) Not only how to use certain gadgets like iPhones, iPads, and the like, but also the ideas that only a young mind can think of. Like Ben said with the touch screens like in the sci-fi movies, any kid can do any thing they can imagine if adults would just believe in them. The girl said that very well. I think she, and many kids like her, should be an inspiration to kids for them to dream big and to adults to listen to their kids dreams. We could make the world a much better place...
